One happy Post Man

Well, as most of you know, we started a porch replacement project in mid-April. The project started off with some much needed removal of the lovely shrubs that encompassed our front yard. That was done in an afternoon by three very strong men; my hubby, my dad and my nephew. And, might I add, this was done after a 54 mile bike ride. Devin’s, my nephew, hands were visibly bruised. My Dad was out there at almost 60, yanking shrubs out of the ground w/ his little Toyota truck…that looks itself to be almost 60 as well! Next we rented a large dumpster and started the dumping of these lovely shrubs with some help from Big Sister. She was out there lugging the shrub branches down the driveway, pink cowboy boots, her dress and her work hat... just like Daddy. The next phase was the jack hammering out of the old porch, starting at 9 a.m. so as not to bother the neighbors too much, and then some major digging. Once that was completed, we had another Saturday morning work day when we poured the footing. Thank the Lord for our amazing group of friends who are easily bribed with Bellacino’s & donuts!!!Once that was completed Jeff worked on backfilling and trying to sort out all the chunks of rock from the huge pile of dirt. Good thing we had little hands to help pull out the rocks. I was able to help w/ the tamping and at least feel like I contributed something. Then came the laying out the new porch. It’s so great to have such a handy hubby who loves to work hard! Finally, about two weeks ago, we recruited our faithful friends, yet again, offered them donuts and coffee in exchange for them sacrificing one more Saturday morning to pour the porch. We hired a finisher named Reuben who worked into the afternoon to ensure that it took shape properly. He was also kind enough to let Big Sis helped with…and stick her hands in the wet concrete. Unfortunately we were not able to get handprints like we had hoped, but we’ll find some way to commemorate our family’s addition to this house! So, now we have a beautiful front porch and one happy mail man. He informed us at the start of this project he almost broke his neck on our old, cancerous steps!
